HISTORY OF THE NEVADA HIGHWAY PATROL ASSOCIATION
2004: A new year

2004: A new year

The NHPA enters 2004 with a newly elected President. As with past presidents Dean Buell will face many new changes and challenges. The fight to allow NHPA members the right to leave the state health plan continues. State wide elections will be held to determine who will represent the citizens in the Nevada Legislature, which is of great importance to the NHPA. The NHP is now in it’s third year as part of the Department of Public Safety with several changes that have been made that may or may not please all NHPA members, but never the less change in inevitable. One significant change is the new shoulder patch. The new DPS patch is similar to the 1973 NHP shoulder patch except the center is in color and the words Nevada Public Safety replaces Nevada Highway Patrol and the words Highway Patrol in smaller letters are at the bottom of the center logo. The new shoulder patch will be the fifth different shoulder patch worn by NHP Troopers since1971.

A new DPS badge has been authorized and troopers are wearing a variety of different uniforms. The job of the NHPA president has never been easy because good or bad the focus is on the president. Buell must carry on the long tradition of the NHPA and yet be receptive to change, because like past presidents his actions and his leadership abilities will be recorded in history.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2004

In 2004, NHPA members have made some major changes. Members voted to disaffiliate with the teamsters local 14. It was a difficult decision and caused many debates. Our contract ended in December. With this disaffiliation our long time lobbyist Gary Wolff has left our service. The board also dissolved is coalition with the State Peace Officers Council, (SPOC).
